Cheryl, an aspiring independent filmmaker, wants to make a film but has no subject. That is until she stumbles upon the story of a mysterious actress credited only as ‘The Watermelon Woman’. Voracious interest leads Cheryl down an investigative journey that teaches her about herself, her history, and the importance of black lesbian visibility. ‘The Watermelon Woman’ was the first feature film directed by a black lesbian and won the Teddy Award at the Berlinale in 1996.
