MIX BOYCOTTS FILMS THAT CAST CISGENDER ACTORS IN TRANSGENDER ROLES

17 October 2018

After much deliberation, we have decided to boycott films that cast cisgender actors in trans roles. We understand that this is a nuanced debate; there are transgender people who pose that casting a cisgender person can be done in a respectful way and there are also transgender people who oppose the practice completely.

However, the reality is that transgender people are not cast in cisgender roles, and when they audition for transgender roles, they are often told they do not fit ‘the look’. The reality is that transgender lives are being misrepresented and transgender people are being excluded from their own narratives. Acknowledging this and the criticism we have received from our audience and individuals within MIX COPENHAGEN, we believe screening the films with transgender actors in transgender roles is the best way to support the transgender community.

As a film festival, MIX COPENHAGEN is one of the last links in the film industry chain. This means that we have the power to decide which films make it to a wider audience. By boycotting films that cast cisgender people to play transgender roles, we are part of determining which films get distribution. We are a relatively small festival but we can still send a message – if you want your film screened, then cast transgender people to play their own stories.

We implemented this boycott to stand behind transgender people and we will continue to put special focus on researching transgender films that cast transgender actors.
